Children’s rights
All children and young people have human rights, which are listed in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). ‘Rights’ are things that every child should have or be able to do. There are lots of rights – known are Articles – laid out in the UNCRC.
There are 42 Articles which talk about children’s rights. The UNCRC states that all children have the right to an education, and protection from all forms of physical or mental violence, injury or abuse. Bullying sits at the very heart of children’s rights.
Bullying is a breach of children’s rights and children must be protected from bullying behaviour so that they can survive, develop, and participate in a fulfilling life.
All adults in your life have an important role to play to help protect these rights, so understanding children’s rights is essential to make sure these rights apply, at home, at school and in your community.
The UNCRC is now law in Scotland. This means that children’s rights in Scotland are respected and protected in law and legally enforceable.
